Éloge du Bug – A critical approach of the naturalization of techniques

Marcello Vitali-Rosati will be the guest of the Wilson Chair for a conference on his book Éloge du Bug, a provocative reflection on the "naturalization of techniques" and the impact of technological choices imposed by GAFAM. Through this analysis, the author questions how technologies are becoming self-evident, often at the expense of the fundamental principles of freedom and transparency.

Topics covered:

  • The paradoxical role of the bug: both a technical obstacle and a revealer of hidden dynamics in digital interfaces.
  • A critical reflection on our dependence on technology, and the regulatory issues at stake in the evolution of digital systems.
  • An analysis of the legal and ethical challenges posed by the simplicity and functionality demanded by GAFAM.

Speakers:

  • Olivier Dyens, expert in social sciences and technology.
  • Marcello Vitali-Rosati, author of Éloge du Bug.

Date: Monday February 10th 2025, from 4-6.

Location: A-3464, Salon François-Chevrette, Université de Montréal and Zoom
